No 26 - Intentionally Make Mistakes: 10 Creative Prompts for Painters

Updated: Nov 17, 2024

There’s a certain magic that happens when we release the pressure of perfection. One of the most liberating practices for artists is to intentionally make mistakes. By embracing this approach, we can explore new techniques, discover unexpected outcomes, and break free from self-imposed limitations.

Setting a timer and dedicating yourself to creating art with the explicit intention of making mistakes can lead to profound discoveries in your work. Here are 10 creative prompts to inspire you to let go, have fun, and see where the journey takes you:

Colour Clash

- Choose two or three colours that you believe clash dramatically. Create a piece using only those colours. Allow the contrast to be the star of the show, embracing the dissonance as you paint.

Blind Contour Drawing

- Set a timer for 5 minutes. Without looking at your paper, draw an object in your studio. This exercise can lead to whimsical and unexpected forms, capturing the essence of your subject in a playful way.

Splatter Experiment

- Grab a brush and a few colours of paint. Set a timer for 10 minutes and splatter paint across your canvas. Embrace the chaos, and don’t worry about control. See what shapes and patterns emerge from the random splashes.

Oversized Brush Strokes

- Use a large brush (or even a household item like a sponge) to create bold strokes on a canvas. Set a timer for 15 minutes and focus on the energy of movement rather than detail. Let go of precision and enjoy the physicality of your mark-making.

Unconventional Tools

- Paint using unconventional tools—like forks, sponges, or even your hands. Set a timer for 20 minutes and let the tool dictate your marks. This prompt encourages you to explore new textures and techniques without the constraints of traditional brushes.

Two-Minute Scribble

- Set a timer for 2 minutes and scribble with a pencil or charcoal on your canvas. Let your hand move freely without a specific intention. Afterwards, add colour or paint over the scribbles, allowing the initial marks to inform your next steps.

Layering with Water

- Start with a wet canvas and add paint without worrying about blending or mixing. Let the colours flow into each other, creating unexpected outcomes. Set a timer for 10 minutes and observe how the paint behaves on the wet surface.

Emotion-Based Painting

- Choose an emotion you want to express (e.g., joy, frustration, confusion) and create a piece that embodies that feeling. Allow your choices of colour, shape, and movement to be influenced by the emotion, even if it leads to “mistakes” along the way.

Collage Chaos

- Gather magazines, old paintings, and other paper materials. Set a timer for 15 minutes and create a collage that intentionally juxtaposes unrelated images and textures. Use paint to connect the elements, embracing the messiness of the process.

Alter a Previous Work

- Choose an older piece that you feel isn't complete or satisfying. Set a timer and intentionally make “mistakes” by painting over it, adding new colours, or altering shapes. This prompt encourages you to revisit your work with a fresh, open mindset.
